Biography:
Dr. Nihal Bakeer is a pediatric hematologist, associate professor of pediatrics, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and Associate Chief Health Informatics Officer – Ambulatory EHR at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Bakeer earned her medical degree from the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan, in 2006. She completed her residency in Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and fellowship in Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Her clinical and research expertise are in hemostasis, thrombosis, HHT, complex vascular anomalies, and pediatric stroke.
In 2024, Dr. Bakeer joined the comprehensive pediatric HHT (hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia) program at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Collaborating with Dr. Lauren Beslow (Neurology), Allison Britt (genetic counselor), and Dr. Elizabeth Goldmuntz (Cardiology), the program provides multidisciplinary care, including genetic testing and screening for children with confirmed or suspected HHT. The CHOP HHT program was awarded a Chair's Initiative Grant (2023–2025) to advance its clinical and research initiatives. Additional key collaborators include Dr. Shih-Shan Lang Chen (Pediatric Neurosurgery) and Dr. Stephanie Fuller (Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery). Dr. Bakeer is trilingual and proficient in English, Arabic and Turkish. Dr. Bakeer is deeply committed to advancing HHT care by providing state-of-the-art, evidence-based treatments and fostering a supportive environment for patients and their families. She strives to advocate for patients with HHT, ensuring they have access to the resources and care they need while also taking the time to get to know them beyond their disease. Her approach reflects her belief that holistic, compassionate care is essential to improving outcomes and enhancing quality of life.
