I was eager and fortunate enough to become involved with the HHT Center of Excellence at Augusta University since its inception in 2003. Since that time, I have thoroughly enjoyed taking care of the HHT population. Each individual has an interesting story of their experiences with HHT and often circuitous path to find us in Augusta, GA. Our understanding of the disease process has improved significantly as have the treatments options available for its various symptomatic manifestations. Originally, the pulmonary AVMs had to be treated by a thoracotomy, partial lung resection, and an extended stay in the hospital. Now there is an outpatient treatment where we can selectively block specific pulmonary AVMs with feeding arteries as small as 2mm in diameter. This is accomplished using a minimally invasive technique with no stitches and the patient goes home two hours later feeling great! There is a growing amount of research being done on HHT patients which should result in improved treatment options and eventual a cure!
